Mountaineers beat Quarry
Dogs 8-1 on Robin Roberts Day in Montpelier
MONTPELIER, VT -- The Vermont Mountaineers were victorious
on Robin Roberts day, defeating the Concord Quarry Dogs 8-1
in front of 3247 at Recreation Field in Montpelier.
Arshwin Asjes pitched a gem, throwing eight innings of
two-hit ball. He got help from solid Mountaineer defense as
he faced just one batter over the minimum in his eight
innings, thanks to a pair of timely double plays.
The Temple right-hander’s only mistake of the game was a
solo home run given up to Dylan Libadisos at the top of the
second inning to get the Quarry Dogs on the board.
Concord’s lead would be short-lived, as the Mountaineers
tied things up in the bottom half of the frame. Chad Durakis
led off with a double, and was moved to third on a groundout
by Robbie Nickle. After a Gerald Ogrinc strikeout, Kyle
Massie singled up the middle to bring Durakis home and tie
the ballgame at 1-1.
Vermont’s offense took over from there on out. Curt Smith
led off the third with a double, and moved to third on a
base hit by AJ Pollock. Shaun Hagey had an infield single to
load the bases, and Mike Sheridan followed up with a base
hit as well to drive in Smith and give Vermont their first
lead of the game, 2-1. Nickle followed suit with a 2-out
single to increase the lead to 3-1.
The Mounties got another run in the fourth when Curt Smith
crushed a Ryan Miller pitch to deep left center field for
his team-leading fourth home run of the season, making it
4-1.
Vermont tacked on a run in the sixth, a Chad Durakis two-run
home run came in the seventh, and they put up another for
good measure in the eighth to make it 8-1 and send the game
out of reach.
Jim Clancy pitched a scoreless ninth for Vermont.
Asjes, who retired 15 in a row at one point, got his first
win of the season. Concord Starter Joe Testa fell to 4-3 on
the year.
Vermont travels to Torrington on Wednesday for the final
game of the regular season. Gametime is 4 p.m. at Feussenich
Park in Torrington.
