Georgia State Duo Sign with Sox

Holyoke, Mass. (Monday April 7, 2008) – Junior middle infielder Chase Childers (Kennesaw, GA) and freshman catcher Mitch Rider (Suwanee, GA) both inked deals to play their summer ball in Holyoke.

Childers, who plays second base and shortstop, is currently hitting at .343 in 102 at-bats, with three homeruns and 20 RBI. He has also stolen five bases in six attempts.

In 2007 Childers finished first on team with seven sacrifice bunts, second with 26 walks and third with eight stolen bases. He had 15 multi-hit games and completed season third on the team with eight multiple-RBI games. His 211 at-bats rank him 10th in single-season at-bats at Georgia State.

Rider, has emerged as the Panthers regular catcher, has appeared in 24 of the team’s 29 games, hitting at a clip of .299 while exhibiting great power. He leads Georgia State in homeruns, with five, in just 67 at-bats, and slugging percentage at .597.

For the past three years Rider was a letterman for Frank Vashaw’s Bulldogs. He hit .427 with 13 homers and 45 RBIs his senior year, helping his team win a regional championship and finishing 28-8. Following that same season he was named Gwinnett County Player of the Year and selected by Florida Marlins in the 47th Round.

Both players are expected to be major contributors for the Holyoke Sox this season and join a roster of players from all over the country including, Vanderbilt University, Cal-State Fullerton, and Oregon State University.

Sox COO/GM Barry Wadsworth says of the two, “these are a couple of guys who can flat out hit. Chase has improved in each of his three years at Georgia State and Mitch will be one of those guys who can put a few balls out of MacKenzie Stadium this year.”
