Keeping the
Baseball Tradition Alive in Lynn
Swampscott Native Moves New England Collegiate Baseball League
Franchise to Fraser Field
The Holyoke Giants of the New England
Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) have announced today in a
Press Conference at Lynn Mayor Ed. 'Chip' Clancy's office at
Lynn City Hall that the team will be relocating to Fraser Field
in Lynn, MA. The franchise will be fielding a Summer Wood-Bat
team under a new name as yet to be determined.
Mayor Clancy welcomed the team by wishing Rosenfield and the new
team 'All the Best'. Lynn Item Sports Editor Steve Krause, State
Rep. Steve Walsh, Director of Lynn Department of Public Works
Jay Fink, Lynn's Office of Economic and Community Development
Facilities Manager John Kasian, Chamber of Commerce Pres. John
Olson of Columbia Insurance, Chamber Exec. Director Leslie
Gould, local Businessman Richard Bane, New England Collegiate
Baseball League Commissioner Mario Tiani and Deputy Commissioner
Eph Mangan, Mrs. Judy Rosenfield as well as other Baseball fans
were all in attendance.
New Team owner Mr. Philip Rosenfield, who is a Swampscott native
is excited to bring top quality collegiate baseball to Lynn and
is looking forward to providing affordable family entertainment
and top quality baseball for the community. Rosenfield stated
that I believe the Lynn community and surrounding North Shore
is a perfect venue for such a community based organization. As a
Swampscott native myself, this relocation is a homecoming for
me. I look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones as
we build this organization through community involvement and
interaction.
The new Lynn team, formerly the Holyoke Giants played for four
years in Holyoke at their home field, Mackenzie Field. The team
had made the playoffs for three of their four years in Holyoke
under two different Managers. Joel Southern led the team for its
first three years. Southern had been an assistant at Western New
England College where he was also a Chemistry Professor. In
2007, Coach Jason Falcon picked up the reins for the last season
in Holyoke also leading the Giants into the Playoffs. Falcon,
who is Head Baseball Coach at Clark University in Worcester, led
the team to the best record in the League gaining him honors as
Manager of the Year in 2008.
The opportunity for the Giants in Lynn came about in September,
when the independent minor league franchise, the North Shore
Spirit, from the Can-Am League chose to cease operations.
Rosenfield was familiar with the Lynn facility. It is an honor
to bring the team to a facility that is recognized as one of the
top Baseball facilities in New England outside of Fenway Park,
and one of the most beautiful minor league fields in the
country. The City of Lynn and the folks here before us had done
a wonderful renovation. We are very excited to have the
opportunity to continue the tradition of baseball in Lynn.
