Giants First Place Lead up to 2 Games

VT (July 29, 2007) The Holyoke Giants (24-16) were defeated by
the Vermont Mountaineers (23-17) by a score of 14-5. The Giants
were not able to clinch first place today, the magic number is
still 2.
Scoring early and often seems to be something Holyoke has been
doing recently and this game was no different as the Giants put
3 runs on the board in the 3rd inning. Craig Turner and Kevin
Renaud led the inning off with a singles. With runners on 1st
and 3rd first basemen, Kent Graham, singled to the right center
gap scoring Turner. Graham was able to take second on the throw.
Matt Remier followed with a blop single to right field, which
scored Renaud. The final run came home when Kevin McDonnell
grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that scored Graham.
Vermont answered quickly in the bottom of the 2nd with 2 runs on
2 hits. Giants starter Colin Feneis left the bases loaded that
inning by striking out Shaun Hagey. Holyoke added another run in
the top of the 3rd off of a Turner opposite field double. In the
5th inning the momentum of the game changed when the
Mountaineers put together a rally of 6 runs bringing the score
to 8-4. The highlight of the rally was a 2 RBI double by
catcher, Chad Durakis.
Vermont put the game out of reach in the 6th and 7th scoring
another 3 runs in each inning. The Giants added their 5th run in
the 9th.
The Giants next game is tomorrow at 7 pm when when the Sanford
Mainers come to Mackenzie Stadium.
