Dukes Swept Away
in Manchester, Worms Clinch Birth
Manchester,
Conn. (July 31, 2007) – The Dukes missed their opportunity to
play the role of spoiler as they dropped a pair of ballgames at
Northwest Park, 5-1 and 3-2.
Mitch Duggins (Northeaster University) took the ball in game one
and was saddled with the loss after going four innings, giving
up three runs, only two earned on three hits, three walks and
striking out four. This game was the continuation of the game
that began back on July 9th at Wahconah Park. They picked it up
scoreless in the bottom of the second inning.
There were few bright spots for the Dukes, but Jim MacDonald
(University of Massachusetts) singled, walked and scored the
lone Dukes’ run of the ballgame. He came in on a Jeff Lieneck
(Wheaton College) double to deep right in the bottom of the
second. Lieneck finished the day 2-for-4 with a run driven in.
Game two got off to a promising start for the Dukes as they were
able to jump out to a 2-0 lead on the Worms. MacDonald reached
on an error and Sam Shaughnessy (Boston College) was hit by a
pitch to put runners at first and second with no outs.
Phil Cerreto (Longwood University) laid down the sacrifice bunt
moving the runners to second and third. Following a strike out,
Jeff Rustico (American International College) grounded to the
right side that was misplayed for a two-run error as the ball
squirted into rightfield.
MacDonald finished the day 3-for-5 on the day with a pair of
runs scored. Chris Powl (West Chester University) did not factor
in the decision as he went five and two-thirds innings, giving
up two runs, one earned on seven hits, he had a strike out and
did not walk a batter.
Even though the Worms have clinched a playoff birth, the teams
will meet for the sixth and final time Wednesday at Wahconah
Park. First pitch will be thrown at 7 and this will be the final
home game of the year for the Dukes.
