Dukes Split Twin
Bill With Westerners
Pittsfield,
Mass. (July 27, 2007) – The Dukes took the first game of the
doubleheader 7-1, but fell in the night cap 8-2 to Danbury on
the strength of a complete game effort from Aaron Taylor (Temple
College).
Taylor, who is usually the closer for Danbury, was the
benefactor of a six run top of the first from his teammates.
Jose Mendoza (University of Maine) only lasted for one out in
the top of the first, he was touched up for six runs, five
earned, on five hits and a pair of walks.
It was the shortest outing for any Dukes pitcher this season and
the deficit was too much for the Dukes to overcome.
In the first game, Pittsfield received a great pitching effort
from Mike DiCato (University of Massachusetts) who made his
first start of the year, and picked up his first win, going six
innings allowing one run on six hits and a walk while striking
out four.
DiCato was aided by his teammates who hit and incredible 7-for-9
with runners in scoring position. Nelson Gomez (Keystone
College) was 3-for-4 overall and 3-for-3 with runners in scoring
position, all three of his hits were RBI singles.
Alex Hassan (Duke University) also had three hits in the day
game, he knocked in a run and scored twice. With the two games
combined, Hassan was 5-for-9 with three runs scored and two RBI,
while Gomez ended the double dip 4-for-6 with three RBI and a
run scored.
The Dukes have another doubleheader Saturday, this against the
North Adams SteepleCats for Games 5 and 6 of the Battle of the
Berkshires Series. Game one is at 1 o’clock at Wahconah Park,
and game two will get underway at 7 p.m. at Joe Wolfe Field in
North Adams.
