Dukes Are
Three-Hit in Loss at Newport
Newport,
Rhode Island. (Tuesday July 23, 2007) – The Pittsfield Dukes
traveled to Newport following their big win in Torrington on
Friday but were unable to continue their winning ways as Gulls’
pitching held the Dukes to just three hits in a 5-1 ballgame at
Cardines Field.
Mitch Clegg (University of Maine) started on the hill for
Pittsfield and cruised through his first three and a third
innings, but ran into trouble in fourth. He surrendered
back-to-back singles, followed by a walk and hit batsman to load
the bases.
The big hit in the inning for Newport was by their catcher Zack
Zaneski (University of Rhode Island) who lined a two-run double
down the rightfield line, breaking a 1-1 tie. Gabe Saade (Duke
University) followed with an RBI single of his own.
Dukes’ relief pitching was solid on the evening. Ryan Watson
(Harvard University), Charly Bashara (Northeastern University)
and Yadiel Lanzo (Keystone College) combined on three and
two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, striking out seven and
allowing just one hit. Dukes pitching struck out twelve Gulls on
the night.
The lone bright spots for Pittsfield’s offense came from their
two All-Star representatives, Alex Hassan (Duke University) and
Nelson Gomez (Keystone College).
Hassan led off the ballgame with a double down the leftfield
line, then stole third during Tony DiCesare’s (Northeastern
University) at-bat, and came in to score on a Tyler Stampone
(The College of the Holy Cross) RBI groundout to short. Stampone
saw his team-leading hitting streak end at 13.
Gomez had a pair of singles, one coming with Scott Savastano
(Franklin Pierce University) on first base in the fourth, and
the other with no one on in the sixth.
The Dukes will be off on Tuesday and home from Wednesday through
Saturday. Wednesday they take on the Southern Division leading
Torrington Twisters at 7. Thursday they host the Newport Gulls
and Friday will play the Danbury Westerners. Saturday is a one
o’clock ballgame as the top end of a home-and-home doubleheader
against the North Adams SteepleCats, with the second game coming
at Joe Wolfe Field at 7 p.m.
